Nursing Students Participate in a Medical Mission Trip to Nicaragua

Several Master’s students in the College of Nursing took a medical mission trip in March to set up mobile clinics to provide medicine, vaccines and screenings to the inhabitants of Leon, Nicaragua.

Britteney Stanton, Kelly Jackson, Stephanie Blanchard, and Stacy Swanson also conducted research on the roles women now play in family life and health care in Nicaragua. Rica Davis, Lina Barakat-Boraby, and Davis Bothe studied the impact of education on cervical cancer screening. This group provided educational sessions on general health and cervical cancer and analyzed the resulting number of women seeking cervical cancer screenings.

For the full story on this experience, please see the UT News article.

Doctoral Student Helps Burn Victim as Part of Capstone Project

Emily Fahrer, an Occupational Therapy doctoral student, recently spent a month in Bucharest, Romania working to help rehabilitate a 16-year-old burn survivor. She worked with an organization called “The Door” as part of her capstone project. For this project, students may do a case study, develop or modify a program/course relating to occupational therapy.  Although Emily had only two weeks instead of the usual two months for her project, she found it to be a holistic learning experience.  The trip not only increased her knowledge of occupational therapy, but also her exposure to the gypsy culture and Romanian alphabet. Ms. Fahrer’s case study is the first from the OT program to be completed internationally.

For more information on Ms. Fahrer’s experience, please see this article in the UT News.

Medical Physics Students Present for American Association of Physicists in Medicine

Nine graduate students in the Medical Physics program recently presented papers at the Great Lakes Chapter of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine during their spring meeting in Ann Arbor.

Doctoral student, Gregory Warrell, was awarded third place for his oral presentation on “Experimental Evaluations of the Thermal Properties of a Novel Thermo-Brachytherapy Seed for Treatment of Solid Tumors”. Presentations were assessed based on the categories of scientific content, innovative research idea, candidate’s knowledge of the subject and effective delivery, among others. U.S. News Ranks Online Graduate Engineering Program One of the Best for Veterans

With Memorial Day fast approaching, the College of Graduate Studies is happy to announce that The University of Toledo’s online M.S. in Engineering program was ranked one of the best online graduate engineering programs for veterans by U.S. New & World Report. The program came in second nationally.

To qualify for the ranking, schools and their programs needed to meet several criteria:
  • Institution must:
    • Be certified for the G.I. Bill
    • Participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program
    • Pledge to consider granting academic credit for military training
    • Offer flexibility for distance learners taking courses at several schools
  • Programs must:
    • Be 100% online
    • Be ranked in the broader U.S. News 2013 Best Online Education Programs rankings

The unique challenges that military service brings (moving from base to base, easing back into civilian life, etc.) make finishing a degree a difficult endeavor for some veterans and service members. The MS in Engineering program’s ranking shows the commitment UT has made to assisting veterans with that transition.

For more information on resources available to military veterans and service members, please visit the Military Service Center website.

Opportunities for Research at UT

Research is an integral aspect of most graduate programs. The ability to conduct research and gain hands-on experience in the field is one of the many methods which graduate programs at The University of Toledo use to ensure our students are well-prepared for their future careers.

Not only does research occur in the labs of our natural sciences, health sciences and engineering programs, but in diverse ways in programs across our campus. Students also participate in research through experiential learning in many disciplines in business, education and the health and social sciences. These include internships, clinical practica and student teaching. Students at UT also gain exposure to research through other on campus events. For example, the College of Nursing will host their 7th Annual Research Conference, titled “Changing Practice through Nursing Research” on Monday, April 22th. The event will be held from 8:30am to 4:00pm in the UT Main Campus Student Union Auditorium. A continental breakfast will be served. Online registration begins March 11 and ends April 21, 2013.

UT’s Graduate Student Association (GSA) sponsors, with support of the College of Graduate Studies, the Annual Midwest Graduate Research Symposium. This year, the 4th Annual day-long symposium will be held on Saturday, April 20th on the UT Main Campus. The GSA has invited more than 65 universities from across the United States to participate in this year’s symposium. More information about the poster and oral presentation sessions and banquet can be found at www.utoledogsa.com. Individuals wishing to present their research are encouraged to submit an abstract online at that site by March 29, 2013. The GSA is hoping for a great turnout of graduate student researchers.

Speech-Language Pathology Master’s Program Receives U.S. Department of Education Grant

The University of Toledo Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) Program recently received a grant from the United States Department of Education to help fund the course work development and practicum experiences for graduate students. The joint grant with The University of Akron was awarded to UT’s program for their efforts to improve the speech and listening skills of children with hearing disabilities through the use of technology.

The grant will also be used in collaboration with the program’s Auditory and Language Enriched Program, which targets listening and spoken language skills in young children through the use of a play group. Additionally, the program provides further education for the parents of children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.  The graduate program in speech-language pathology is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA). For the past four years, 100% of the SLP graduates are employed in the field.

The College of Graduate Studies would like to congratulate the program on this prestigious grant. Individuals interested in the Speech-Language Pathology program may receive more information by contacting the program office at 419.530.2495.

Unity Week: Make A Way

It’s Unity Week here at The University of Toledo, and there is a lot going on! Organized by the Office of Student Involvement, Unity Week is designed to engage students in conversations about unity and acceptance. In sticking with this goal, below is some information on graduate diversity at The University of Toledo.

The importance of diversity to the graduate community is evident when looking at the variety of backgrounds our graduate students represent. In fall of 2012 over 20% of applicants admitted to The University of Toledo at the graduate level were international students or reported being from an ethnic minority. International applicants for that term came from China, India, France and Saudi Arabia in addition to many others.

The College of Graduate Studies has been proactive in efforts to attract a diverse pool of qualified applicants to the University of Toledo. In the past several years, the graduate college has increased support for underrepresented minorities through the promotion of the Graduate Opportunity Assistantship Program and the McNair Scholars Program. The College of Graduate Studies has also supported initiatives to promote women in the STEMM fields and has raised awareness of federal funding resources for our students.

For a schedule of Unity Week events or to volunteer, please visit the Unity Week webpage or call 419-530-2992.

For more information on how the diversity policies of the College of Graduate Studies, please see the diversity plan on our website.

Toledo Provides Added Resources for Adult and Military Students

The University of Toledo has recently received a lot of attention for a strong commitment to serving adult and military students make the transition to (or back to) higher education. These non-traditional students are often juggling outside responsibilities that a traditional college student does not have to worry about. UT recognizes the added responsibility and has made several resources available to these students to help them be successful in their studies.

One such resource for adult students is the new Office of Adult Student Extended Service. Housed in the College of Adult and Lifelong Learning (C.A.L.L.), this office aims to assist adult students in the transition into their current degree program or non-degree classes.

The UT Military Service Center has also received media attention for providing similar support to military veterans. The University also hosted a week of events in November as part of the national Joining Forces Week.

U.S. Army Captain Trent Miller was able to utilize these services during his time as an MBA student before graduating this past fall. As an army officer, a concentration in leadership seemed to be a natural fit for Capt. Miller’s MBA. In a December 2012 UT News article, Miller stated “All of the leadership-specific classes have been very applicable to what I have been doing the last nine years. All of the faculty members, in my experiences, have been very receptive to my comments and input into the class”.

The College of Graduate Studies would like to thank Captain Miller and all our military veterans for their dedicated service. More information on resources for adult students and military veterans can be found on the College of Adult and Lifelong Learning webpage.

A Mother of Four Earns Her Doctorate

With programs ranging from accounting to music education, from certificates to doctorates and from completely online to completely on-campus; The University of Toledo has graduate programs fitting a wide variety of interests and lifestyles. It is this variety that makes stories like Dr. Kristy Taylor’s possible.

Dr. Taylor recently graduated from The University of Toledo with a Ph.D. in Higher Education. After earning an MBA and teaching part-time at a community college, Dr. Taylor knew she wanted to earn her Ph.D. When starting the program four years ago, Kristy had two young sons. By the time she accepted her diploma this December, she was a mother of four boys ranging from ages 2-7.

Through the support of family, friends and colleagues, Kristy was able to persevere and achieve her professional goals while still starting her young family. Not only did she earn her Ph.D., but Dr. Taylor is now a visiting instructor in the UT College of Business and Innovation.

The College of Graduate Studies would like to congratulate Dr. Taylor on her tremendous accomplishment. For more information on Dr. Taylor’s story, check out this UT News article.
